Yoga Benefits For Menopause
Menopause is the natural stage of life that affects all women to signify the end of their reproductive cycles.
There are three basic stages of menopause, which are known as peri-menopause, menopause, and post-menopause.
Peri-menopause is a defining period as it is the transitional stage before menopause, which can start as early as age 40. The fluctuation of hormone levels during this stage can cause the cessation of menstrual periods.
Menopause is defined at the point of 12 months after the last menstrual cycle. For most women the menopause typically occurs at the average age of 51. However, some women can enter menopause at a younger age.
Post menopause defines the point when a woman’s transition into her non reproductive years is complete and remains for the rest of her years.
For some women menopause can be an extremely daunting and challenging time whereas for others it represents a beautiful transitional process. Whatever a women’s perspective, approximately 80% of women do experience some symptoms at varying degrees.
Common Symptoms Of Menopause:
- Hot flushes
- Night sweats
- Sleep disturbances
- Mood swing’s
- Headache or migraines
- Brain fog
- Vaginal dryness
- Urinary tract infections
- Bladder weakness
- Low libido
- Weight changes
- Joint & muscle aches
- Thinning of hair
Additionally, menopause can cause skin-related symptoms, such as an increase in facial and body hair, active acne, skin discolouration. Menopause accelerates the ageing process of the skin, causing fine lines, wrinkles, and loss of luminosity. Hot flushes can cause sensitive skin.
A common physical symptom women experience during menopause is intense painful menstrual cycles, which is not only uncomfortable but can be irregular and can lead to feelings of irritability and frustration.
It is common for women going through menopause to experience emotional symptoms, such as depression, anxiety, feelings of anger, frustration, even sadness or grief as they come to terms with the end of their fertility years, or what may also feel like the loss of their youthfulness.

Yoga Benefits For Menopause
Studies suggest that yoga is one of the natural ways to help relieve and manage the full spectrum of symptoms related to menopause.
As someone who has practiced yoga for over 30 years, taught yoga, and 7 years into the post menopause phase, I can truly state that yoga was invaluable during my own menopause I was able to cultivate a sense of calm in the face of change. It enabled me to keep my nervous system balanced, thus my emotions. It reinvigorated a sluggish metabolism and restored depleted energy. I used the practice to maintain strength, tone, and resistance without overheating my body.
Yoga is a mindful practice and if adopted regularly can be a complimentary therapeutic method that significantly improves stress, anxiety, anger, depression, mood swings, and also sleep.
Specific poses with focus on the stretching and opening the pelvic region can be an aid to pain relief during heavy, uncomfortable menstrual cycles.
Movement during yoga helps increase fluid around joints and tissues, keeping them soft and supple maintaining ease of mobility.
Always follow a guide and take precautions when practising yoga. Avoid hot yoga types if you are experiencing hot flushes.
