Spiced Infused Poached Pears
A simple to make, healthy and delicious desert.
Rich in vitamin C, copper, and potassium.
A great source of anti-oxidants and polyphenols.
Serves 4
Takes 120 minutes
Ingredients
- 4 William pears
- 1 earl grey tea bag
- 1 litre water
- 75g caster sugar (optional Xylitol sugar)
- 9 cardamon pods (optional use powder)
- 5 cloves
- 1tsp cinnamon powder
- 1tsp vanilla paste
Method
Boil 300ml of the water.
Place the earl grey tea bag into a mug and pour over the boiling water.
Allow the tea to infuse.
In the meantime, peel the skin off the pears, keeping the pear stalk intact.
Place the pears into a pan.
Once the tea has infused, squeeze the tea bag dry and discard.
Place the tea, rest of the water, sugar, cardamon pods, cloves, cinnamon powder and vanilla paste into a jug and stir well.
Pour the liquid over the pears, covering their tops.
Heat up the liquid and simmer gently for 1 ½ to 2 hours.
Remove the pears from the pan and sit to one side.
Remove the cardamon pods and cloves, discard.
Increase the heat of the liquid, keep stirring until a thick syrup consistency is achieved.
To Serve
Pour 1 to 2 tbs of syrup onto a serving dish, then place the pear on top of the syrup.
Delicious simply as they are at room temperture.
Although, when feeling the need for more indulgence I love these spiced pears with stem ginger ice-cream.
Tips
I often make extra to store as a ready made healthy desert.
Store
Fridge 1 week.
Ensure the pears are stored in their liquid in a serialised jar. Use the liquid rather than reducing it to the syrup to ensure the pears are fully covered.
