‘The Self’ Psychological & Esoteric

People often say ‘I’m not feeling myself’ when they are in a negative emotional or physical state.
In this article I will provide psychological and esoteric approaches to embody the true essence of the self.
In this article I will provide psychological and esoteric approaches to embody the true essence of the self.
We are born with our true essence of ‘the self’. As a child we’re free from the everyday burdens that we experience as we mature.
Take a moment to notice where you may need to practice on ‘the self’. It will cultivate freedom to be who you really are and desire to be. It is important to nurture the true essence of ‘the self’ not only physically, but emotionally and spiritually.
Self-Psychology
Self-psychology is a school of psychology that emphasises the importance of the self in human development and functioning. It was developed by Heinz Kohut in the 1970s as a response to the focus on the unconscious in traditional psychoanalysis.
The Esoteric Self
Esoteric is a more general term that refers to any approach to psychology that emphasises spiritual or mystical aspects of the human experience. It is often associated with Eastern philosophy and religion.
The esoteric self is the true or essential self that lies hidden beneath the layers of personality, ego, and conditioning. It is the part of us that is connected to the divine, the universal, and the eternal.
The esoteric self is often described as being beyond words and concepts. It is the source of our creativity, intuition, and spiritual insights.
The path to the esoteric self is a journey of self-discovery and self-transformation. It requires us to look beyond our superficial self and to delve into the depths of our being. It is a journey that is not always easy, but it is a journey that is ultimately rewarding.
Some of the core concepts of esoteric psychology of the self can include:
- The importance of introspection and personal growth.
- The belief in the power of the mind to heal itself.
- The use of mindfulness, meditation, yoga, and other spiritual practices to achieve self-realisation.
- The belief in a higher power or spiritual reality.
Psychology & Esoteric Combined
Psychology and esoteric approaches are not mutually exclusive. They can be used together to provide a more comprehensive and holistic approach towards connecting with the true self. The self, psychology, and esoteric can be seen as complementary approaches to understanding the human mind.
Psychology focuses on the individual’s sense of self and how it is formed through relationships with others.
Esoteric, on the other hand, takes a more holistic view of the human being, and sees the self as part of a larger spiritual reality. Ultimately, esoteric is about exploring the mystery of the human mind and soul, and there is no one right way to do it.
Both psychological and esoteric approaches emphasise the importance of empathy and compassion in the therapeutic relationship, with focus on the present, past or future.
The best approach towards self-growth for any individual will depend on their particular needs and preferences. Some people may find that psychology is a more helpful approach, while others may prefer the esoteric. It is important for each individual to explore different approaches to find what works best for them.
Here are some specific examples of how psychology and esoteric can be used together:
A psychology therapist might help the individual to develop a stronger sense of self by providing them with empathic understanding and mirroring. The therapist might also help the individual to identify and work through any self-defeating patterns they have developed.
An esoteric approach might help the individual to develop their spiritual awareness by teaching them about mindfulness, meditation, yoga, and other spiritual practices.
Mindfulness involves a committed awareness of our thoughts, feelings, bodily sensations, and surrounding environment, with a caring and nurturing attitude.
Meditation is a powerful tool for quietening the mind and accessing deeper levels of consciousness.
Journaling can help us to explore our thoughts, feelings, and experiences in a safe and confidential manner.
Shadow work is the process of exploring the parts of ourselves that we disown or repress. By facing our shadow, we can become more whole and integrated.
Yoga is a physical, mental, and spiritual practice that can help us to connect with our bodies, our breath, and our inner selves.

The journey to the self is a lifelong journey. The most important thing is to find what works for you and to be patient and persistent. As you explore the deeper levels of your being, you will discover the true nature of yourself and your place in the universe.
Why not start to explore the self through some esoteric practises via yoga, mindfulness and breathwork classes. Throughout your day, pause and take a moment to tap into the true essence of ‘the self’ characteristics.
